Bone Health
Bone Health Overview
As we grow older, we take care to be screened for many of the diseases we’ve come to associate with aging, from common types of cancer to cardiovascular disease. But many of us probably worry less about another condition that commonly occurs with aging: bone loss. Bone loss can affect men as well as women, and is a particularly important issue for cancer patients: several types of cancer treatment are known to decrease bone density.
Bone loss is a silent condition. It has no symptoms and occurs slowly over the years. Many people have no idea that they’ve suffered bone loss until one day they trip, fall, and fracture a bone. By learning about the causes and consequences of bone loss, as well as approaches to prevention and treatment, we can take steps to boost bone health.
